Dolly Parton's Dollywood Charged With Gay Discrimination

Gay advocacy groups are charging Dolly Parton's Dollywood theme park with discrimination after a lesbian wearing a ‘‘Marriage Is So Gay" t-shirt was told at the gate that she must turn the shirt inside-out before she could enter.
Related Topics
Olivier Odom decided to oblige to the request of the employee of the Knoxville park by hiding the slogan. She then entered with her spouse of one year, Jennifer Tipton.
Odom, under the advice of a group called Campaign for Southern Equality, has since written a letter to the park about the incident that occurred two weeks ago. The letter was published online in the “Censorship in America” blog and several gay advocacy media sites earlier this week.
“To ensure that your customers are not treated this way in the future, I would like to see Dollywood implement policies that are inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people; conduct staff sensitivity training; and issue a public statement indicating that the park is inclusive of all families,” Odom wrote.
A Dollywood spokesperson said the incident was a misunderstanding and a matter of a strict dress code policy, according to news reports.
"Thousands of times a day our front gate hosts are asked to enforce our dress code policy,” the spokesperson, Pete Owens, told The Advocate.
"It doesn't have anything to do with who the people are or what their belief system is or with anything other than the fact that we try to prevent as best as we can upon entry of the park one of our guests being offended by something someone else is wearing.”
WBIR-TV in Knoxville reports that purchase of the shirt worn by Odom raises money for an organization that promotes gay marriage. Odom wrote the letter to the park under advisement from an organization called the Campaign for Southern Equality, the station reported.
Dollywood enforces a strict dress code policy. “To preserve our family atmosphere proper clothing is required including shirts and shoes (sandals or flip-flops are acceptable). Clothing with offensive words and/or pictures will not be permitted inside the park.”
“Dollywood reserves the right to require additional or different attire where we deem appropriate.”
Officials with Dollywood say they plan to contact the couple to address the complaint.

Drugs Likely Not Responsible For Amy Winehouse's Death, Insiders Tell Us

Sources close to Amy Winehouse tell PerezHilton.com exclusively that they believe drugs were not responsible for the singer's untimely death.
Instead, they believe Amy's passing was brought on by a massive seizure.
"The hardcore drugs completely wrecked Amy's nervous system," an insider tells us. "She gave up all that [hardcore drugs] a while ago but she was still drinking heavily, which would bring on seizures."
Amy had been suffering from seizures regularly and despite being warned by doctors kept drinking.
An official autopsy has yet to be completed.

Background

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is an inherited genetic disease in which tissue in the liver or lungs may become damaged, which prevents them from working properly. The first symptoms of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency usually occur between the ages of 20 and 50, but some infants or children may be affected with the disease as well. About one in 3,000 to 5,000 people are affected with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency results from a genetic mutation that causes the body to make reduced levels or an abnormal form of a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin. Alpha-1 antitrypsin normally protects the body from a powerful enzyme made by white blood cells. In patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, this enzyme is not properly controlled, and it can damage the lungs.
Individuals with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency usually experience respiratory symptoms, including shortness of breath following mild activity, reduced ability to exercise, wheezing, coughing, recurring respiratory infections, fatigue, and rapid heartbeat upon standing. Eventually, patients may develop emphysema, a condition in which the small air sacs in the lungs (called alveoli) become damaged. Patients with emphysema experience difficulty breathing, a hacking cough, and may develop a barrel shaped chest. The respiratory symptoms patients develop result from tissue damage in the lungs.
Some patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency may develop liver disease and experience symptoms such as a swollen abdomen, swollen feet or legs, and yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
Currently there is no known way to prevent alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency may have reduced life expectancies, depending on the severity of the symptoms.
